September of 2005 saw not one but two hurricanes hit in the general vicinity of Vero Beach within three weeks. Today the area has somewhat recovered from the devastation but there is still much to be repaired or otherwise tidied up. There are blue sheets of plastic still covering many roofs and every where you look are roofing company trucks and teams of workers scampering around like ants fixing roofs as fast as they can. A lot of them have come here from other states to join in the re-roofing frenzy. During the big blows last year, the roof of Joan and Phil’s house was one of the thousands that were damaged. Only last week did a repair company finally work its way down the waiting list to come out and repair their roof. Well, it would seem that because of all the work there is around here, the mantra for the roofing companies is to get it on as quickly as possible and move on to the next job. Unfortunately, this means that there is, shall we say, a potential for the quality of the installation to be a little lacking. Brother-in-law Phil, being quite adept at climbing ladders and having no fear of heights … nor men with sharp tools in their hands… has no qualms about roaming around the roof to make sure the workers are doing the job right. Pity the workers. Phil noticed that the job wasn’t being done to anywhere near the quality that is needed to make sure that a random person walking by the house who sneezes won’t blow the shingles into the next county. That’s about how bad they were being put on. So, a quick call to the company resulted in the job foreman coming out, looking, and agreeing that the shingles needed to be replaced. So, off came the old new shingles and on went the new new shingles. Now you would think the job was done right this time, right? Nope, not according to our eagle eyed home owner. Once again, problems with the installation were noted. Ok, now we call in the big guns. The man in charge of quality control for the company for all of southern Florida comes out to the house to take a look. His conclusion; yeah, well there are some inconsistencies. As of this writing, the decision to re-roof yet again has yet to be decided. But if they are smart, they will do the right thing. After all, Phil is Italian. And he “knows people”. YaknowwhatImean?
