A week in review

Spent the past week in Hartford, Connecticut but we didn’t do a whole lot of running around. We’re learning that we occasionally need to take a few days and slow down the go-go-go every day all day pace that we do most of the time. So, we spent several days just lazing around not doing much. That’s not so say that we didn’t do anything at all though. Hartford is where Mark Twain spent most of his adult life so we visited the house he had here which is an historic site. Another day we drove down to Essex, Ct. and took a combination steam train and riverboat ride along side of and on the Connecticut River. The boat ride was nice but I can’t recommend the train ride. Although it goes along side the river for about 10 miles, I would estimate that you can see the river for probably not much more than about a mile of that length. The rest of the time you are getting an up close and personal look at the trees that otherwise line the river bank and thus obstruct your view.

The only other thing of note that we did was to drive down to the Mystic Seaport area. Unfortunately, we didn’t know that the port area is a pay to enter area and they were closing early that day for an employee picnic. That would have left us only about an hour to see the place in exchange for the $17 entry fee… each. So, we opted to go visit the two well known Indian casino’s in the area, Foxwood’s and the Mohegan Sun. They are both nice but the Mohegan Sun is much nicer. The design of Foxwood’s doesn’t emphasize their Indian heritage anywhere near as much as the Mohegan Sun does but it is in a very modern style. Appearance aside, they both are equally adept at taking your money. Thus, it would appear that these aren’t our great grandfathers Indians. These today are very wise to the white man’s ways. Taking what little money we had left then, we finished the visit with a nice chicken dinner at the Mohegan Sun. But the Colonel and his secret recipe still rules when it comes to taste.

So now it’s on to New York City. We’re meeting our long time friends Tom and Gretta Xander there for a five day visit to the “Big Apple”. Should be a gold mine of experiences to blog about. Stay tuned. Photo's in the gallery.
